The Communication students of Adamson University expressed their alternatives to save electricity after Manila Electric Company (MERALCO) rates up to P10-per-kilowatt-hour (kWh) in April.

According to Ma. Kyla Tolentino, first-year Communication student, shared her standpoint in terms of the effect of the double charge in electricity expenses.

(English Translation: Due to the increase in electricity price it can affect people who do not have enough salary to pay the double digits of electricity expenses therefore there is a possibility that they will not be able to save money for their need for a month)

Moreover, Carmela Ruiz, fourth-year Communication student, also mentioned her thoughts in the electricity bill increase announcement.

“Yung pag adjust na naman ng budget dahil nagkaroon ng taas singil sa kuryente affected nanaman yung budget namin para sa iba pang needs namin sa bahay (Because of the increase in electricity charges it affects our budget to cope up our needs on our house),” Ruiz stated.

However, they both wanted to help educate electric consumers by giving alternatives that can save electricity consumption.

Tolentino mentioned that every household must be informed on how to limit the use of appliances.

“Upang makatipid sa kuryente kung hindi naman ginagamit ang mga electric fan or wala naman tao patayin na lamang ito at kung hindi naman gaano kainit wag na gumamit ng air-con. Dahil makakatulong din ito sa pagtipid ng kuryente at mababawasan din ang iyong mga gastusin,“ she said.

(English Translation: If you are not using an electric fan or [if] there are no other people using it, we must turn it off; and if it’s not very hot, don’t use the aircon because it can help to save electricity and lessen the expenses.)

Meanwhile, Ruiz also shared another alternative to refrain from spending too much electricity that can lead to expensive bills.

“Kapag walang gumagamit ng appliances, papatayin. And may oras lang din ng pag-gamit (When there are no people using appliances, turn it off. And there is an allotted time when using)," she said.

In an update, Meralco announced that the overall power rate increased this month would be higher if not for the implementation of an additional rate.

“After two consecutive months of rate reductions, the Manila Electric Company (Meralco) announced today that the overall rate for a typical household slightly went up by P0.0625 to P9.6467 per kWh from last month’s P9.5842 per kWh,” Meralco said.
