Dribbling his dedication to playing, he continues to shoot his shot for his basketball journey.

Meet Klasmeyt Jaime Lorenzo “Jelo” Cuntapay, a young basketball player from Palawan who has proven himself both in the field of basketball and academics.

Despite being a student-athlete, Jelo had shown how playing basketball never hindered his studies. Just as how he is competitive inside the court, he also brought that attitude when it comes to academics.

With the list of his basketball achievements, he has been a consistent academic awardee since high school. Currently in his 2nd year of college, he is taking up Bachelor of Science in Biology at Adamson University, where he is also a dean’s lister.

Given a chance to represent his city in regional competitions, he was selected to compete in basketball at the MIMAROPA Regional Athletic Association Meet.

Another milestone arose when he was invited to play in Manila for the Milcu basketball league, representing Philippine Christian University.

For Jelo, balancing his academics and sports duties is a talent. His routine is to wake up as early as 4:00 AM for training, then afterward, attend his classes and do his requirements.

“I manage it by doing the things that I need to do ahead of time so that I can rest during my free time and prepare for the next practice,” he said.

Jelo was also a swimmer way back in elementary. Indeed, he has shown how gifted he truly is when it comes to sports.

Nevertheless, playing basketball for six years and counting is genuinely his passion. Surely, it even runs in their blood as his uncle Leo was one of his basketball influences.

“It has always been my dream, from watching NBA games and playing pick-up basketball with no shoes [on],” he said.

Apart from wanting to pursue a basketball career in the future, the 20-year-old athlete’s main goal is to finish his college degree.

As he takes one step closer to his UAAP basketball dream, he recently signed a contract from a sports agency in Iloilo, where he has been staying already for two months.

Basketball has always been the goal, but Jelo always makes sure that he is having fun showing what he got as he plays his all-time favorite sport.
