Due to lighter travel restrictions implemented, domestic tourism is expected to increase during the celebration of Holy Week 2022.

As this year’s Holy Week starts from April 10-16, it becomes a reason for Filipinos to go to known travel destinations amid the pandemic.

Two local airlines Philippine Airlines (PAL) and AirAsia Philippines have also announced the increase of domestic flight frequencies this month.

In an advisory of PAL, starting from April 8, there will be five flights a day between Manila and Bacolod; on April 11, once a week flights between Manila and Basco, Batanes will operate twice weekly.

From thrice weekly in March, flights between Cebu and Bacolod have been increased to four times weekly.

On the other hand, AirAsia Philippines also increased its flight frequencies to 30 percent to accommodate the surge in bookings amid the religious observance.

“We recognize the significance of the Holy Week celebration for Filipinos. As our Catholic brothers and sisters observe this religious practice, we at AirAsia continue to offer a safe and attainable travel experience essential for those flying to their provinces this holiday season,” said AirAsia spokesperson Steve Dalisan.

While accommodating the possible hike of passengers this upcoming Holy Week, AirAsia Philippines ensured that they continue to adhere to health and security protocols for the public safety.

“We commit not only to the highest health standards, but also to the highest security protocols especially now that all destinations in the country have relaxed interzonal travel regulations,” Dalisan added in his statement.

Expecting an increasing number of travelers this upcoming holiday season, DOT Secretary, Bernadette Romulo-Puyat, urged the need for a booster shot, especially in the tourism sector.

“Alam naman natin na everytime na tumataas ang kaso ang unang nawawala ang ay tourism,” Puyat said in an ANC interview.

As Holy Week is the peak season for tourism, DOT reminded of the safety protocols that must be observed and the continuous booster program.
